Dita von Teese Beauty tips!

Cointreau ambassador Dita Von Teese shares her beauty and makeup secrets with Cosmo.

Cosmo caught up with burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese to find out her makeup secrets and how to apply the perfect red lips! Who doesn't want to know how Dita looks gorgeous every day with her DIY tips? I'm sure that every lady who loves glamour wants to read this.

Cosmo: You’ve got incredible skin, how do you look after it?
D: I have really sensitive skin so I have a really good dermatologist. I never go to bed without washing my face, I always wear sunscreen; I wear a hat whenever I’m out in the sun a lot. I don’t smoke cigarettes, I drink water, and I eat well.

C: What sunscreen do you use?
D: I usually love Shiseido, they make really nice ones. I love when they have a slippery talky texture, that's light. And also Dior makes some really nice ones. I love Dior snow White Reveal UV Base, it feels so nice, really silky and not greasy.

C: Do you apply your own makeup? If so, how do you apply your eyeliner?
D: My tips are mostly about, 'ok it’s not always going to be perfect, it takes a lot of practise, you have to find what’s easier for you'. Like some people like to use a really sharp pencil, I can't use a pencil at all, I really screw it up. I use liquid liner and a small brush or a gel liner with a thin brush. I think it’s really about spending a lot of time figuring out the SHAPE, looking with the mirror in different directions, different angles to see that you’re on the right track. It’s one of those things that you have to keep practising. Even when I don’t wear my eyeliner for a little while, which happens a lot, I’ll spend the week working around the house and I don’t go out or anything. I find it becomes harder to draw, even though I’ve been drawing eyeliner for 20 years! It’s just something you have to practice all the time. Practice makes perfect and you can’t expect to be able to do it perfectly every time. You have to accept failure and accept it’s not ALWAYS perfect.

C: Which is your favourite brand of eyeliner?
D: I mostly like to use MAC Blacktrack, which is a gel eyeliner in a pot, and I use a really thin brush.

C: And what about your red lipstick?
D: I have lots of favourites, I really like luxurious cases and I like so many different textures for different times. Today I'm wearing an Yves Saint Laurent ROUGE PUR #1 , which is really nice, it comes in a beautiful case. I also love Dior Rouge Bingo. They also have really great lipstick cases. I reallylove the ceremony of applying lipsticks in beautiful cases. I also think Guerlain makes really beautiful lipsticks, they also have one I love calledExcess Du Rouge.

C: Do you have any tips for making it last?
D: Well matte lipstick is really good for that. I know people don’t often like matte lipstick but I love it, powdery red look looks so beautiful and lasts longer than anything else. The real trick is you have to check on it, you can’t decide you’re going to eat a cheeseburger and not check on your red lips. It’s something you have to keep up with and sometimes I have red lipstick on my teeth, and that’s fine, hopefully someone will tell me, or hopefully I will remember to check it. That’s the way it is, it can be slightly high maintenance. But it my opinion, it’s worth it, I love a bright vibrant colour, even if it’s not red! I like orange, I love fuchsia. There’s something that I’ve always loved about having that statement of colour on my face.

C: Do you think it’s best not to fear colour and just try it?
D: I think a lot of people are so convinced they can’t, a lot of people are used to seeing themselves without it, and that’s fine. I guess it’s just the same way that I can’t imagine being without, I’m really self-conscious when I haven’t got a lip colour in full force. To me I feel like I don’t have a mouth!

C: You're a natural blonde, how do you dye it black?
D: I go buy a box of hair colour at the market. I do it myself. I’ve always loved doing it myself. When I first started dyeing my hair black, I remember my brother-in-law at the time was a hairdresser, and he used to do it back in the early nineties for me. But then I asked somebody, who said you can dye your hair yourself. Black is pretty simple. So I started doing it myself and I’ve never swayed from that. I feel powerful when I buy a box of hair dye for seven dollars and have a whole new outlook on life. I don’t have to make an appointment; I’m not being charged $300. I hate sitting in beauty salons and I feel good about myself when I know I can do it myself.

C: Which one do you use, do you use the same one each time?
D: I usually use Garnier 100% Colour I think it’s called. I always look for the bluest, bluest black.

C: Do you have any tips for DIY dyeing?
D: I’m always naked, so I don’t get black hair dye on my clothes. I always pull the rug away so I don’t drop any black hair dye on my rug. I always do it in privacy. I don’t want my boyfriend around; I don’t want anybody seeing my hair and walking around naked with crazy slick head of blue! I always take my eyebrow brush, which is like a thin, slated angled brush, and I dip it in. I paint my eyebrows exactly the way I would do my makeup... like really carefully. You can’t just slap it on. I do it really meticulously; the same way I apply eyeliner. That’s what I do and it works for me. I love to have black eyebrows too. That’s one last thing I don’t have to do when I’m doing my makeup - my eyebrows are already on.

C: Do you tint your lashes?
D: No, I really love false lashes. I used Latisse Lash Growth Serum for a while which did work, it made a difference. I also used little to fill in the spots in my eyebrows if I wanted it to be a little bit thicker and it worked. I don’t use it every day or anything, I use it on and off.

C: Have you got any other beauty must-haves that you can't live without?
D: My hot rollers and my Mason Pearson brush. I love my Mason Pearson brushes! They last me for years and years. They’ve never let me down, and are always worth every penny in the end. And my hot rollers, I feel even more stronglyabout my hair than my makeup. If I have red lipstick and curls in my hair I’m pretty happy.
