Some make-up advice

Some tips

Just wondering, have you ever heard of make-up artists ? yes? But I must say it’s not the same as a Visagiste.  A make-up artist is an artist whose medium is the human body, applying  Make-up and prosthetics for theatrical, television, film, fashion, magazines and other similar productions including all aspects of the modeling industry.  Awards given for this profession in the entertainment industry include the Academy award for Make-up and even several entertainment industry awards such as the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes to name a few. In the United States as well as the other parts of the globe, professional licenses are required by agencies in order for them to hire the MUA. Bigger production companies have in-house makeup artists on their payroll although most MUA’s generally are freelance and their times remain flexible depending on the projects.

Fashion Makeup
Fashion makeup is used in magazine photography as well as on the fashion runway. Avant garde Make-up is also an applicable technique used for projects that require experimental themes. Fashion makeup is also commonly used in television and film ranging for the natural prime look to more sophisticated applications such as color balance.

Theatrical Makeup
Stage makeup is used as a method in conjunction with stage lighting to highlight the actors' faces in order make expressions visible to the audience from moderate distances. This often includes defining the eyes and lips as well as the highlights and lowlights of the facial bones.

Special Effects Makeup (FX Makeup)
The use of special effect techniques enhancing physical features to exhibit metaphysical characteristics as well as fantasy makeup. The use of prosthetics and plaster casting are also required for projects that entails non-human appearances. Accents such as theatrical blood and ooze are also techniques applicable to this type of makeup.

Airbrushing
The use of an airbrush which is a small air-operated device that sprays various media including alcohol and water-based makeup by a process of nebulization. The earliest record of this type of cosmetic application dates back to the 1925 film version of Ben-Hur, it has recently been re-popularized by the advent of HDTV and Digital Photography, wherein the camera focuses on higher depths of detail. Liquid Foundations that are high in coverage but thin in texture are applied with the airbrush for full coverage without a heavy build-up of product.

My experience :

This introduction gives you an idea what make-up and photography is all about. Last Friday we had a Make-up artist on a visit in our Photography lesson  http://www.beauty-makeup.be/ to show us the differences of before and after the make-up. Well I must say, it’s a huge difference. I would love to have that make up every day hehe……she uses Kryolan products the most, but it’s very expensive and professional quality. See the website here : http://www.kryolan.com/index.php.

She told us that fond de teint (foundation) has to be as fluid as it can and it’s supposed to be the color of your skin for natural look and not like you have been under the Tuscan sun for 3 weeks. Every single piece of skin has to be covered with that, cause otherwise the differences are too big and are truly visible on photos. Use a lighter color for the middle of the face (as a triangle) and a bit darker at the edges to give more dynamic to the face and photos.

Difficult places like, around the eyes and some wrinklers can be corrected with a correction brush or consealor. The finishing touch is fine powder, be careful with opening the package, cause we don’t want to have a brown snow around and clothes have to be protected from it (especially don't sneeze in it :p). So use a towel or huge sheet to cover the model's clothes. For nude shoots they use a paintbrush. After that, Blush can be added, but not necessary. She adviced not to use blush for black and White shots, cause that really will add a dark spot in the face which is not elegant at all and hard to remove while processing the photos.

She also said that the wetlook is created by Vaseline who has a special expressive look on the photos. Eyeshadow has to be placed in layers, so use the dark colors close to the eyelashes (standard). Just under the eyebrows you have to use some lighter looking powder.
Eyeliner must be added as close to the eyelashes as it gets, follow the eyelashes until about 2 cm from the end and then gow up a bit. So you have that elegant happy look and to make your eyes larger, not looking like a grieving widow. Best colors to use are Earth colors and ofcourse what’s suets you best. Mostly brown, black, green and grey.

Don’t forget the eyebrows, that’s very important. Special brushes are made for that and can be found easely in any make-up shop. Use a fine brown powder to lift them up and make them longer if you have to.
So I guess that were the main things she said. Oh yes : don’t forget the lips, for the natural look, use some Gloss and don’t add it completely to the corners of the lips. Otherwise it looks that she has been slobbering. To add a normal lipstick, just first draw a line inside the liplines (don’t go out of the natural liplines, otherwise it won’t look natural), use the same colors as the lipstick and then add the lipstick with a paintbrush.

That’s what I have learned in school last week and I must say : it’s a whole bunch to remember. So I hope that, when I write it down here, I won’t forget it either in a while hehe. I guess I can always read my own article now.

The 10 basic steps :
1.      First use a day cream for hydration
2.      Foundation (fond de teint)
3.      Use a correction brush or concealor
4.      Add powder
5.      Add blush (if needed)
6.      Paint the eyes with eyeliner and eyeshadow
7.      Add mascara
8.      Color the eyebrows with brown powder
9.      Color the lips with Gloss or Lipstick
10.   After all this, don’t forget to leave the make-up artist with you the whole time to refine and correct the lips, false eyeliners etc…… if needed.

One last tip I got was : Do all this after the hair is done first ;-)
Have fun reading and thank you for coming by! If you want to make some corrections in what I wrote here, please let me know. Cause these are the basic elements she told us about make-up.
